Background

Educators, students and parents need accurate information if they are to make sound decisions about substance abuse prevention programs in their schools.

Over 500 communities have incorporated random student drug testing into their comprehensive prevention programs to keep children and adolescents safe, healthy and drug-free. Two historic U.S. Supreme Court decisions support drug testing of students in extracurricular and athletic activities.

Student drug testing programs are designed to prevent drug use, not to punish use. This website provides parents, students, educators and community representatives a practical source for comprehensive information about student drug testing including:

  • Research information about student drug testing;

  • Information on the benefits and limitations of student drug testing;

  • Reliable resources for parents, students, educators, and community representatives; and

  • Strategies to create and improve student drug testing programs.
